Many Smarties have asked me about syndicating their web show. They want to know what that means and how do they go about doing it. Basically, when you are syndicating your web show, you are making your show available via RSS feeds, widgets, codes, or video players and broadcasting it on other (third-party) websites.

Next New Networks syndicates some of the Web's most popular regularly scheduled and episodic programming.

You may have heard people throw out the word, “super-syndication” (or “super-distribution”) when talking about web shows. That basically means blasting out your show to any and every possible site. There are a number of ways to do this. For instance, on Blip.tv, a social video network, you can syndicate your videos by simply pasting your code on any third party websites and you can automatically distribute your video to your own accounts at Yahoo, iTunes, AOL, MySpace, FaceBook, and Feedburner. So basically, the goal of super-syndication is to get as many views as possible on as many different platforms and websites as possible.

Unfortunately, syndicating your web show does not mean you’re “in the money” like it does with television. However, you can make money syndicating your web show. Here are a few ways you can make money on your syndicated web shows:

When you give your content to other websites to publish, you can charge a licensing fee.

Have some sort of advertisement within your video – such as pre-rolls, banner ads, or even product placement, so that when the video is clicked on, you are generating revenue.

Use or create a video platform that you can distribute on third-party sites that is pay-per-view or subscription based.

While super-syndicating is one strategy for web shows, it is not the only strategy. I always recommend content creators target their niche communities. Rather than throwing your show out there and seeing if it sticks, try and build your viewership wherever you are – like on Facebook or YouTube. iJustine, a video blogger, did just that by making comedic videos for a mostly high school, YouTube audience. Through using her excellent sense of cross-promotion with a great understanding of the power of current technology (Twitter and social networking) plus some fun editing techniques and a funny personality, iJustine has over 73,000 friends on Facebook and over 8 million channel views on YouTube! Once you have a community with solid demographics that you can clearly show to advertisers, you will most definitely generate revenue.

Kendall Rhodes is the founder of Spin and Stir Media, a boutique Internet video production company in Los Angeles. Spin and Stir Media produces low-cost, high-impact Internet video campaigns for businesses of any size and in any industry – with a special focus in fashion, beauty, lifestyle and the arts.

Personal productivity depends on being strong and healthy, in mind and body. But sometimes, wellness practices are the things that get thrown by the wayside when you’re focusing on building your business. You know what we’re talking about – cooking your own food instead of hitting the drive-through, actually going to those yoga classes you claim to attend, practicing relaxation techniques before you reach the break-down stage, visiting your health care practitioners on a regular schedule – those sorts of wellness practices. You might be surprised to know that countless women, in spite of eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and scheduling lots of “fun” activities, still suffer from insomnia, irritability, fatigue, headaches, anxiety, depression, and problems with their cycles.

According to a recent report from Price Waterhouse Coopers LLP, consumers are focusing on health and wellness. Does that surprise you that it’s a newer trend? After all, didn’t many of us live through the workout craze of the 80s? This isn’t new, or is it? What is different is the shift toward functional foods. Functional foods are foods fortified with nutrition to promote better health and foods that possess disease-preventing qualities. So it should come as no surprise that consumers desire healthful foods that are convenient and loaded with as much nutritional value as they can find. What hasn’t changed is the consumer’s desire to have all the health benefits without changing their behavior. As much as we’d really like to believe we can get something for nothing, it doesn’t work like that. You have to take charge of your health, just like you take charge of your business.

Our eating habits are often affected by our stress levels, and poor nutrition further compounds stress. Stress is the fuel that keeps our motivation going, when present in moderation. Stress is a part of everyday life, but the foods you eat can help support a healthy body and a healthy mind, good sleep, an active sex life, and a greater sense of satisfaction and well-being. Eating junk food, eating too much, or skipping meals may be symptoms of stress and may be an indication that you are out-of-balance.

One woman relates the following story that illustrates the predominant mindset in our culture: “While working at a large consulting firm several years ago, my boss appointed me to an innovative life-balance committee because he believed I was a role model for life balance since I was working 70 hour weeks while simultaneously training to run in the Los Angeles Marathon. He thought I exuded life balance because I made time for work and play, but the truth was, I was out of balance because the “get adequate rest and sleep” part of the equation was missing. For the two weeks following the LA Marathon, I was limping around the office at work because I tried to sprint the marathon without adequate preparation and rest.”

Sound familiar? Who’s rewarding you for wearing yourself out? Are you pushing too hard, and going past your limits routinely? In spite of knowing what you should be doing to take care of yourself, you might be starting to skip meals and grabbing less nutrient-dense foods because of stress affecting you at work. Stress causes wear and tear on our bodies through aches and pains and illnesses of both the mental and physical variety. Stress increases your vulnerability to accidents, flu season, insomnia, depression, and a host of other ills.

Don’t be a victim to poor health. Try to get to the root of the problem that is causing stress. When you feel stress building, stop and listen to your body, and then do something proactive to diffuse some of the stress. A massage, a nap, a little exercise, or a well-balanced fresh meal can work wonders in alleviating stress, bringing you back into balance, and helping you maintain your focus and energy.

Running your own business has many great advantages, such as being your own boss and doing what you love to do. If you have an idea and the passion to make it happen, is that enough to make your dreams come true? No. But fear not…

Here are 5 things you must avoid if you want your entrepreneurial journey to be smooth and profitable:

1. No Vision

If you aren’t clear about what you want or how to get it, then fear and procrastination will rule your world. You will get stuck. When you become clear in your vision, then you become clear in how you can make it real. You will develop a sense of direction and will attract solutions that are in alignment with your purpose. So, ask yourself, “What do I really want?” And operate that way.

A vision is different from your wishes, ideas and goals because it is a deeper engagement. Vision causes you to go beyond your comfort zone and to go further into immersing yourself in achieving your goals. Your vision governs every action you take in your business. It will run on its own, and motivates profit, and can even establish shareholder expectations. You and your organization will stay stuck unless you are governed by or acted upon by a vision. Clear visions create clear movements in people.

2. No Business Plan

Often, entrepreneurs do not know how to write a business plan, how to design an action plan for immediate results, or how to get funding. They feel overwhelmed by changing priorities.

A Business Plan is your roadmap for success. It will enable you to transform your idea into a plausible business. It defines and organizes your business and gives you the knowledge, confidence and sense of commitment you need to take your business seriously. It will also get the attention of investors, potential employees and customers. Having a Business Plan helps you to focus, specify your goals and effectively communicate your vision.

No Business Plan = No Funding. So you MUST do one if you want to attract capital. In preparing your Business Plan, you will also be able to identify the Action Plans and Strategies you need to put into place in the crucial areas of your business. . .

3. No Systems In Place To Launch, Run And Expand Your Business

To maximize your effectiveness in ANY business venture, you must ask yourself the following:

What Problem are you solving in the marketplace?

Why are you Different? What makes you so special?

What are your Business Objectives?

What Products/Services do I offer? Now and in the future?

Who are your Customers? Get clear on your Niche Target.

Who are your Competitors? (If your answer is, “I have none,” then think again.)

What is your Sales Strategy?

What is your Marketing Strategy?

What are your Internal business processes?

Who are my Executive Team, Management, Employees and Advisors?

What is my Plan for raising Capital?

Regardless of if you need funds, have you prepared a realistic Financial Plan?

What is your Exit Strategy?

How will you keep Learning, Innovating and Growing?<ins datetime="2009-10-13T23:45" cite="mailto:Sofia%20Agras"></ins>

If any of these things are overlooked or if they do not interconnect effectively<ins datetime="2009-10-14T00:03" cite="mailto:Sofia%20Agras">,</ins> then the daily activities within your organization will not be in alignment with your vision, objectives and performance measures. You will be reactive and use the Shotgun approach to running your company. By preparing your Business Plan, you will naturally see what things need to be done in each of these areas, devise Action Plans to get to those results NOW, and put systems in place so the business can run smoothly and profitably.

4. Not Honest About Your Personal Financial Situation

Your personal financial situation may be a mess, and you don’t want to face it. Many entrepreneurs start a company from this position. They think that starting a business will make them more money. The sad truth is that it will cost you FAR more than what you think to get your company launched. You may actually lack the reserves required to survive the many months you do not take home a paycheck.

If you have not done realistic projections, you won’t know the risks you face. Or you may be on a tight or non-existent budget which causes major stress and can strain the strongest of relationships. Do you blindly believe in your idea, and are you spending your life savings on pursuing your dream, but have not analyzed the impact launching a business will have on you personally?

5. No Legal or Accounting Advice & No Mentors

Entrepreneurs often argue they can’t afford a lawyer or an accountant. You can’t afford not to. Make sure to speak to an attorney up front, who will advise you on how to set up the proper business entity, to protect your personal assets and mitigate personal financial risks.

If you don’t have an accountant, get one. Now. Even if it is part-time. Do you think an accountant is only there to keep the IRS happy? An accountant can save you time and money and grow your business.

Let these professionals give you a reality check. Don’t end up scraping by, or worse yet, lose your home or max out your credit cards at ridiculous interest rates, possibly ruining your personal credit. This will prevent investors from wanting to fund you in the future. If you can’t manage your own money, what makes you think an investor is going to turn their funds over to you?

There are many other people who make up your core consulting team and each one of them falls into the category of ‘mentor’. These valuable people are Board Members and Advisors, business coaches and consultants; professional service consultants such as website developers, internet marketers and copywriters; even personal trainers and well<ins datetime="2009-10-13T23:57" cite="mailto:Sofia%20Agras">-</ins>being coaches who can support you and keep you in peak health. Having mentors helps you avoid making mistakes and wasting money. They help sustain your passion and resolve.

6. No Outsourcing

I’ll keep this one simple: Don’t dilute your priorities. How many goals can you reasonably accomplish and focus on? 3, maybe 4 at a time? STOP MULTITASKING! Outsource the things that someone else can do better and faster than you! It will save you time and keep your sanity intact. Spend your time and energy on the things that win you clients and make you a profit instead. Ask yourself, “What can I do with the time and resources at hand?” Hire a Virtual Assistant for 5 hours a week? Be open to the concept of support, and your working life will be much easier.

7. Not admitting to having “Blind Spots”

The premise is that you have all the answers. The fastest way to success is to know what you don’t know! Or to be willing to find out what you don’t know so you can determine what needs to change in your business. This will unlock creativity and help you to run your business more profitably on a day-to-day basis. Raise your hand if you think you know your blind spots! Enough said. J

When I used to look at other successful men and women, I would ask myself…”Where do they find the time to get it all done?” Or….”How do they do it all?”

Well, the simple answer is THEY don’t do it all. They do something that I used to be the pits at…ask for and receive help.

The most successful business people know that “Owning Your Own Does Not Mean Doing it Alone.”

I admit, I used to be a work-a-holic. My daily personal and career to do list was a mile long.

I used to try to get it all done by myself…and in one day. Then I would beat myself up for not getting it all done or done faster. Filing, marketing, answering email, cooking, cleaning, calling clients, lead generation, sales, networking, running errands…on and on.

Then…finally, I started “offloading my overwhelm” – that is, finding great people to do the stuff I did not have time or did not want to do, or was not good at. Admittedly, it was a slow process at first. I had to make a lot of what I call “mindshifts” but, step-by-step, I got rid of the most time consuming, unproductive, tasks that just drained me of my enthusiasm and entrepreneurial spirit. Interestingly, by actually doing these tasks myself, I was also draining my bank account, because I was not spending the time I needed to on the most “value adding things” for my business. Once I offloaded 80% of the things I was doing that were not adding value to me or my business and focused on the 20% that did, my entire life and business changed for the better. Some tasks were offloaded to “in house assistants” that worked just a few hours a week; other tasks were offloaded to virtual assistants.

So what are “virtual assistants”?

Virtual assistants are people who work for you remotely from their homes or offices. You can have them do things for you full time, from time to time or just a few hours a week.

And the interesting thing was, it cost me a lot less than I thought it would. For example, I am not someone who particularly likes to cook. I know how, I just don’t want to. So…I now have someone who comes in and cooks for me once every two weeks. She grocery shops, plans the meals – to my and my husband’s liking – prepares them, cleans up and freezes them. Presto, I have two weeks of healthy gourmet low calorie meals all for less than it costs me and my husband to go out to dinner 3 times over that same 2-week period. On top of that, with the time it takes to cook breakfast, lunch and dinner, she saves me at least 2 hours a day. That’s, 56 hours a month! I now spend that time working more productively on my business or doing something else I love.

Now, I offload as much as I can. You would not believe how much…even checking my email (yikes!).

So, pick something that is a time consuming waste of time for you, and commit to finding a way to offload it. If you enjoy cooking, pick something else, but ask yourself…”Who else can I get to do this for me?” When you ask the right questions… the answer comes. And…I promise…you can get it done for a lot less than you think.

Last week I snuck out of the house for a hairdo and a chance to relax from the husband and kids, and instead I sat in the hairdresser’s chair reading a stressful article in Parents magazine about the challenges of raising sextuplets in the July 2009 article “The Joy of Six”. And my husband and I thought we had it tough juggling our two full-time jobs while raising a 1 and 3 year old. But six at a time???!!!

From reading the article, Jenny Masche does an amazing job raising the kids by keeping her pint-sized troops to a regimented schedule, but she could use a little help when it comes to mealtime. Right now the kids are fed frozen, processed dinners (micro-waved frozen chicken nuggets or hot dogs and cut up fruit) while Jenny and her husband Bryan feed themselves take out for dinner.

What Jenny and Bryan may not know is that it takes about the same amount of time to prepare a convenience food dinner as it does to cook a meal from all fresh foods. In 2005, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) completed its first academic study to track American families moment by moment as they made dinner. What they discovered was that working families relied heavily on so called “convenience” foods for dinner. The surprising part was that dinner did not get on the table any faster in homes that favored convenience food. Meals still took an average of 52 minutes in total time to prepare regardless if it was home-cooked or if the family relied partially or heavily on convenience foods.

My challenge to anyone is that cooking real, fresh food is practically as simple to prepare as so-called “convenience” foods. And fresh is best over convenience foods because fresh foods tend to be more healthy, flavorful and free of harmful pesticides, chemicals and preservatives. If you have a few essential food items, tools and methods, then the fresh food practically cooks itself…that is with a little help from the microwave, oven or stovetop. Without relying on complicated recipes with lengthy lists of ingredients, most families can have their meals prepped in as little as 5-10 minutes.

Check out the dinner I made the other night with minimal effort. It took me about 10 minutes in total preparation, and during the 20 minutes that it cooked itself I had time to feed my baby boy his bedtime snack and put him to sleep. Of course, if I had 6 kids like the Masches, I would not have squeezed in the baby feedings—but I still would have prepped the dinner in about 10 minutes.

My challenge to anyone is that cooking real, fresh food is practically as simple to prepare as convenience foods. Try it for yourself and you will see that it does not take as long as you think to cook fresh fish with dill and lemon juice versus frozen fish sticks.
